About me

If I wanted to assure you of my experience and commitment, I’d start by telling you I’ve been writing since I was old enough to hold a crayon without chewing it. If I needed to convince you of my erudition, I could kick off with a quote. If this was an op ed, I might illustrate the landscape with an anecdote, or pose a rhetorical question. And were I to put myself in character as a high school student giving a speech, I’d begin with a dictionary definition (probably from the OED, rather than Webster’s).

Writing well depends on who you are writing for, why you are writing for them and what you want them to do. I’m addressing you honestly and demonstrating my range in the hope that you’ll get in touch.

If I work with you, I’ll ask all about what you need, why and when you need it, and the tone you need it to be in. That’s how I’ll know where and how to begin, and how you’ll get the copy that works for you. And if you’re not sure, well, my writing experience has developed hand in hand with a good deal of digital marketing, social media, and content strategy, so I can help with that, too.

As a former journalist turned blogger, web editor, social media manager and senior writer, I’m comfortable with just about any platform. I’ve worked both agency side and in-house across the education, tech, retail and charity sectors, so I can switch workflow processes as quickly as I can tones of voice.

A quick reference list of the kinds of copy I can turn my hand to is below, and of course this site is packed with examples of the finished product.

So drop me a line. I enjoy reading, too. Oh, and please: call me Alex.

Things I think about writing

  1. There is nothing wrong with a split infinitive. No-one wants to go boldly.
  2. It is possible to be ambivalent about the Oxford comma. Sometimes it matters; sometimes it doesn’t.
  3. Of course you can start a sentence with a coordinating conjunction. And I do it all the time.
